The Welland Site provides a Comprehensive General Ambulatory Ophthalmology Program for the population of Niagara.
As of September 2012, all Ophthalmologists in the Niagara Health System work together in one location to perform cataract surgery, as well as other general ophthalmologic procedures in the operating room suites, minor procedure area and clinic settings.
The Ophthalmologists perform approximately 5,600 eye surgery procedures per year and have a dedicated day surgery area along with a teaching classroom which provides education for patients undergoing this type of surgery.
The consolidation of Ophthalmology to one site provides the program with the opportunity to reduce duplication of capital equipment and supports the provision of high quality care through dedicated, trained staff members working within the service.
